DR. POSSI DISMISSES ALLEGATIONS RAISED BY REPRESENTATIVE OF EAST AND HORN OF AFRICA HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS NETWORK
On 18 June 2025, during the 5th meeting of the 59th session of the Human Rights Council, Dr. Abdallah S. Possi, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the United Republic of Tanzania to the United Nations Offices and Other International Organizations in Geneva, addressed the Council. He firmly dismissed the allegations raised by the representative of the East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Network, stating that the claims were erroneous, misleading, and misconstrued.
Dr. Possi reaffirmed that Tanzania fully upholds its obligations under the Constitution as well as regional and international human rights instruments. He emphasized that Tanzanian citizens enjoy the freedom to express themselves and voice their opinions, including criticism of the government. He further noted that Tanzania is a mature democracy, having held seven peaceful, free, and fair multiparty elections, and has never failed to conduct elections as mandated by the Constitution. Based on historical trends, he stated that similar expectations apply for the upcoming general elections.
Highlighting Tanzania’s stability in a diverse society composed of various ethnicities, beliefs, and political ideologies, Dr. Possi credited the country's commitment to the rule of law. He stressed that this commitment ensures fair and equal treatment for all, including the individuals referenced by the representative of the Network—who, he pointed out, had not disclosed their true purpose of entry, a standard requirement under immigration laws in many countries.
While acknowledging that the claims made are yet to be independently verified, Dr. Possi stated that Tanzania takes allegations of torture, sexual abuse, and other malpractices seriously. He noted that investigations are underway, and should the claims be substantiated, the responsible individuals will be held accountable. He expressed regret that the organization had raised alarm over concerns that no longer exist, cautioning the Council to be vigilant against baseless accusations directed at Member States.
Dr. Possi also highlighted the transparency of legal proceedings in the mentioned case, noting that they are broadcast live via online TV platforms, allowing global access and scrutiny.
In conclusion, Dr. Possi reiterated Tanzania’s strong commitment to upholding human rights and the rule of law, especially as the nation approaches the general elections in October 2025. He assured that a conducive and peaceful environment is being maintained for all political parties to conduct their campaigns freely and fairly.
